Is snoring a big deal?

Is snoring a big deal?

HECK YES!

Snoring is on the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders and is often the first sign of more serious sleep disordered breathing to come. This could be sleep apnea or upper airway resistance syndrome.

How Common Is Snoring?

Twenty to forty percent of people report occasional snoring, and 10-20% report regular snoring. There is a reason that people snore, and often it can mean bigger issues down the line. With 80-90% of sleep disorders UNDIAGNOSED, it’s important we look for all warning signs!

The snoring “sound” comes from the vibration of the soft palate and uvula as the muscles of the throat and mouth “collapse” as we are sleeping. This can be caused by a number of factors, like alcohol, excess body weight, and especially important, the anatomy of your mouth! It’s not just overweight individuals or people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea that snore…many (often very slender) people who suffer from the sleep disorder Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome snore too.

Snoring In Children

Snoring is especially scary in kids, be it from a weight perspective with childhood obesity concerns, or from a developmental perspective! If they are snoring now, and they are continuing to grow in this pattern, are things going to improve or get worse? Tonsils and adenoids could be obstructing and/or facial growth could be restricted. Much better to correct these signs that we KNOW predispose a child to long term sleep disorders EARLY than too late!

So if your partner says you snore, or you are a positional sleeper (can’t sleep on your back, only on your side or stomach), you wake up gasping, you wake with morning headaches, you have excessive daytime sleepiness, even if you’re a “light sleeper”…a sleep study could benefit you to ensure there is nothing serious going on!

FAQ About Snoring

Q: How do I know if my snoring needs professional treatment?

A: If you snore regularly, are a positional sleeper, wake up gasping, experience morning headaches, or have excessive daytime sleepiness, you should consider a professional evaluation. Our comprehensive sleep screenings can determine if your snoring indicates a more serious condition.

Q: Can children's snoring be treated at Balanced Dental Studio?

A: Yes, we provide pediatric sleep and airway evaluations for children ages 4 and up. Early intervention is crucial since childhood snoring often indicates developmental issues that can worsen over time without proper treatment.

A: Snoring occurs when throat and mouth muscles collapse during sleep, causing soft palate vibration. Our snoring treatment options include custom oral appliances and airway assessment to address the root anatomical causes.

Q: Is snoring always a sign of sleep apnea?

A: Not always, but snoring is on the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders. It can indicate sleep apnea, upper airway resistance syndrome, or other conditions. Our home sleep studies can provide accurate diagnosis.

Q: What's the difference between occasional and regular snoring?
