How Long Do CEREC Crowns Last? A Lifespan Guide

What Really Determines How Long a Crown Lasts

A CEREC crown’s lifespan depends less on the crown and more on what happens around it. Your bite, your habits, and the health of the tooth and gums underneath all play a big part. Regular checkups help us catch small problems before they cut a crown’s life short.

A patient sat down in our chair last spring holding a tiny chip of porcelain in a napkin. She’d been crunching ice from her drink on the drive home. Her first question was simple. “Did I just ruin it?”

That fear comes up a lot. You spent a morning with us getting a CEREC crown, and now you want it to last. We understand! But the crown itself is rarely the weak link.

Here’s what we’ve learned after years of placing Same-Day Crowns (CEREC). The material is strong. What wears a crown down is usually something happening around it, or to it, every single day.

So what makes the difference? These are the things we look at most during exams:

  • How hard you bite. Clenching or grinding at night puts steady pressure on any crown, natural tooth, or filling.
  • Brushing and flossing at the edge. Decay can start where the crown meets your tooth, and it’s often hidden from view.
  • Gum health. If gums pull back or get inflamed, the base of the crown can lose support over time.
  • Where the tooth sits. Back molars do most of the chewing, so they take more of a beating than front teeth.
  • Using teeth as tools. Ice, pen caps, popcorn kernels, and tearing open packages are common culprits.

Notice something? Most of that list is up to you, not the lab or the porcelain.

Grinding is the one people miss. You can’t feel it while you sleep, it just shows up as a sore jaw or a headache in the morning. If that sounds familiar, mention it at your next visit. We’ll take a look and talk through what we see. We won’t guess from a description.

The tooth under the crown matters too. A CEREC crown covers your tooth, but it doesn’t replace it. And if that tooth or the gum around it runs into trouble, the crown can’t do its job anymore. Healthy roots and gums are what a crown leans on.

Then there’s the active Lakewood lifestyle. Lots of our patients mountain bike on Green Mountain or play rec hockey in the winter. One bad fall can crack any tooth, crowned or not. A mouthguard is worth thinking about if you ride or play contact sports.

Checkups are the unsung hero here. We see this all the time: a tiny gap or early spot of decay at the crown edge that the patient had no idea about. Caught early, it’s usually a small fix. Missed for a few years, it can mean redoing the whole thing.

Our patient with the ice chip? Her crown turned out to be fine. The chip came off the ice, not the porcelain. But she’s switched to sipping her drinks now, and her coffee at Belmar stays coffee only.

Small habits. Big payoff.

Signs Your Crown May Need a Closer Look

You’re halfway through a bagel at a café on Union Boulevard when something feels off. Not pain, exactly. Just a tiny click when you bite down on that one side. Most people shrug it off and keep eating.

But that little click is worth paying attention to.

A CEREC crown is built to last a long time. Still, it sits on a real tooth in a mouth that’s always in motion. Gums shift with age. The cement under the crown can wear down. Habits like grinding put steady stress on it, and most people don’t even know they grind.

Small warning signs usually show up before a bigger problem does. Here’s what we’d want you to mention at your next visit. None of these mean something is wrong for sure. They just mean it’s time for a look.

  • The crown feels loose, or it shifts when you push on it with your tongue
  • New sensitivity to hot coffee or cold water that wasn’t there before
  • Your bite feels high or just different when you close your teeth
  • A dark line showing up near the gumline around the crown
  • Gums around that tooth looking puffy or red, or bleeding when you brush
  • A chip, crack, or rough edge you can feel with your tongue
  • A bad taste or smell that keeps coming back near one tooth

You don’t have to figure out which sign is serious. That’s what an exam is for. We check the edges of your crown, look at the gums, and use digital X-rays to see what’s happening underneath.

Lakewood winters can make cold sensitivity easier to catch. That first sharp breath of January air on a walk around Belmar Park might be the moment you notice it. Don’t brush it off as just the weather. Write it down and tell us.

From our chair: A patient once told us she’d had a sour taste near one crown for about a month. She figured it was something she ate. When we took a closer look, we found a problem starting at the edge of the crown. Because she came in when she did, the tooth underneath was still in good enough shape for a new crown.

Small signs are usually easier to fix than big ones.

And sometimes a crown just pops off, usually during something sticky like taffy or caramel. It’s unsettling, but it happens. Here’s what to do if it happens to you.

  • Find the crown and rinse it gently with water.
  • Keep it in a clean container or a zip-top bag.
  • Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.
  • Skip the drugstore glue, since it can make the fix harder.
  • Call us and bring the crown with you to your visit.

We keep same-day emergency slots Monday through Thursday for moments like this. Because we design and mill our same-day dental crowns right here in the office, a replacement often doesn’t mean weeks of wearing a temporary. Every case is different, so we’ll talk through your options once we’ve had a look.

Don’t wait for it to hurt, pain often shows up late. If something feels different, that’s reason enough to call.

How to Help Your Crown Reach Its Full Lifespan

A patient came back to see us a few weeks after her CEREC crown. She looked nervous. She’d bitten into a hard pretzel on a hike up Green Mountain and felt a strange click. Was the crown ruined?

Lakewood family hiking outdoors reflecting active lifestyle linked to dental crown habits

It wasn’t. The crown was fine, and so was the tooth. But her worry is one we hear a lot, and it points to something most people get backward.

The crown is rarely the weak spot. The real tooth underneath it is.

Ceramic doesn’t get cavities. Your natural tooth still can, especially right at the edge where the crown meets the gum. Plaque likes to hide there. So when a crown fails early, it’s often because decay crept in along that line, not because the crown itself gave out.

That’s good news. It means most of what keeps your crown going is in your hands. Here’s what we tell our patients in the chair after their crown is placed.

  • Brush twice a day with a soft brush. Angle it toward the gumline so you clean the spot where the crown and tooth meet.
  • Floss every day. Slide the floss out sideways at first if it feels snug, then go back to your normal motion.
  • Skip using your teeth as tools. Tearing tape, opening bottles, or cracking nut shells puts stress on any tooth, crowned or not.
  • Go easy on ice and very hard candy. A crunch here and there is one thing. Chewing ice every afternoon is another.
  • Keep up with your Regular Dental Checkups and Exams and Professional Dental Cleaning visits. We check the crown’s edges and catch small problems while they’re still small.

None of these are hard. Most of them are habits you probably have already, just aimed a little more carefully.

A Lakewood tip: our air is dry, especially in winter and up at higher trails. A dry mouth has less saliva to rinse away food and bacteria, and that can raise cavity risk around a crown. Sip water through the day, more so after a long hike at Bear Creek Lake Park or a night out at Red Rocks.

Grinding is the other big one. A lot of people clench at night and have no idea. You might wake up with a sore jaw, a dull headache, or teeth that feel tired. Over time that pressure can wear on a crown and the teeth around it.

If any of that sounds familiar, mention it at your next visit. We can look for signs of wear during an exam. And if jaw pain is part of the picture, our TMJ/TMD Pain Treatment is something we can talk through with you.

One more thing. Don’t wait out a crown that feels off. If your bite suddenly feels high, the crown feels loose, or the gum around it gets tender, call us. Small fixes are easier to make early, and we hold same-day emergency slots Monday through Thursday for exactly that kind of thing.

Think of it like a good pair of hiking boots. The boots are tough. But you still clean them, check the seams, and don’t use them to pry rocks loose.

FAQ
